Italian baritone Pietro Spagnoli has long been recognised as one of the most distinguished interpreters of the Mozart, Rossini and Donizetti repertoire. Celebrated for his vocal refinement, impeccable phrasing and exceptional theatrical instinct, he has appeared at the world’s leading opera houses, including Teatro alla Scala, Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Wiener Staatsoper, Teatro Real Madrid, Gran Teatre del Liceu, Opernhaus Zürich, Staatsoper Hamburg and Semperoper Dresden, as well as the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro and Festival d’Aix-en-Provence.

His extensive repertoire encompasses many of the central baritone and bass-baritone roles of the classical and bel canto repertoire, including Figaro and Bartolo in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Count Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni and Leporello in Don Giovanni, Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte, Don Magnifico, Dandini and Alidoro in La Cenerentola, Dulcamara and Belcore in L’elisir d’amore, the title role and Malatesta in Don Pasquale, and Selim, Prosdocimo and Don Geronio in Il turco in Italia.

In recent years, he has successfully expanded his repertoire with roles including Falstaff, Gianni Schicchi, Michonnet in Adriana Lecouvreur, Sharpless in Madama Butterfly and Fra Melitone in La forza del destino.

2026/27 SEASON

Pietro Spagnoli opens the 2026/27 season at the Teatro Real in Madrid as Geronte di Ravoir in a new production of Puccini’s Manon Lescaut, conducted by Nicola Luisotti and directed by Carlos Wagner. He subsequently returns to La Monnaie in Brussels as Don Magnifico in Rossini’s La Cenerentola and to Teatro Massimo in Palermo as Falstaff.

In early 2027, Spagnoli makes his Opera Australia debut at the Sydney Opera House as Dulcamara in Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore.

A major highlight of the season is his debut at the Opéra national de Paris in the title role of Donizetti’s Don Pasquale at the Palais Garnier, in Damiano Michieletto’s production.

RECENT HIGHLIGHTS

Recent seasons have included Sulpice in La fille du régiment at Teatro alla Scala, Michonnet in Adriana Lecouvreur at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, Tobia Mill in La cambiale di matrimonio at the Rossini Opera Festival, and Nanouncourt in Nino Rota’s Il cappello di paglia di Firenze at the Opéra Royal de Wallonie.

Spagnoli made his title-role debut in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi at the New National Theatre Tokyo and returned to Opernhaus Zürich in the title role of Don Pasquale, Gran Teatre del Liceu as Fra Melitone in La forza del destino, and Teatro alla Scala and Theater an der Wien in Gassmann’s L’opera seria. His recent engagements also include Sharpless in Madama Butterfly, Don Basilio in Paisiello’s Il barbiere di Siviglia, and appearances in the zarzuela repertoire at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid.

Among the defining roles of his career is Verdi’s Falstaff, which he has performed in Karlsruhe, Shanghai, Hamburg, Liège and Lisbon. His long association with the Mozart and bel canto repertoire has taken him to the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Wiener Staatsoper, Teatro alla Scala, Teatro Real, Gran Teatre del Liceu, Opernhaus Zürich, Staatsoper Hamburg, Semperoper Dresden and many other major international stages.

Alongside his performing career, Spagnoli is increasingly active as a teacher and vocal coach. He has collaborated with the Accademia Teatro alla Scala and has given masterclasses and worked on educational projects in Italy, Spain, Turkey and Chile.
