BIOGRAPHY
Slovakian mezzosoprano Jana Kurucovà started her artistic activity on stage within the Young Artists Program of the Bayerische Staatsoper Munich, then was part of the Ensemble in Heidelberg where she made her first important debuts as ‘Rosina’/IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA and ‘Sesto’/LA CLEMENZA DI TITO. From 2009 to 2018 she was part of the Ensemble of the Deutsche Oper Berlin where she had opportunity to expand her repertory and debut in many major roles, before joining the Ensemble of the Staatsoper Hamburg in 2019 until end of season 2024-2025.
As a guest she has performed at the Semperoper Dresden, Bayerische Staatsoper Munich, Klangfestival Dortmund, Musikfest Bremen, in Stuttgart, Graz, Sevilla, Olso, Prague, Bejing, Tokyo and continued to perform as a guest at the Deutsche Oper Berlin every season. Besides opera, she has a wide concert repertory which ranges from Berg to Mendelssohn, from Dvorak to Mahler.
In season 2025/2026 a row of exciting debuts are on schedule: ‘Komponist’ in ARIADNE AUF NAXOS in Prague, the mezzosoprano soloist part in NOT THE MESSIAH (adaption of Monty Python’s THE LIFE OF BRIAN) at the Landestheater Salzburg, ‘Kedruta’ in Janacek’s THE EXCURSIONS OF MR.BROUCEK at the Festival Bregenz in summer 2026. She will return to the Theater an der Wien as ‘Orlowsky’ in Stefan Herheim’s new production ‘DIE FLEDERMAUS’ as well as to Prague for a further revival of TAJEMSTVI.
In the past few seasons she also did highly successful theatre debuts at the Opera in Zurich (Romeo in ‘I CAPULETI E I MONTECCHI), at the Theater an der Wien (as the ‘Fox’ in ‘THE CUNNING LITTLE VIXEN), at the Opéra Royal de Wallonie in Liège (‘Foreign Princess’/ RUSALKA), and a great new role debut, ‘Giovanna Seymour’/ANNA BOLENA at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, furthermore she debuted the role of ‘Virgin Roza’ in Smetanas delightful opera TAJEMSTVI (The Secret) in Prague.
During season 2024/2025 another successful role debut took place, ‘Varvara’/KAT’A KABANOVA at the Opéra Royal de Wallonie in Liège, in Bratislava she was the ‘Fox’ in a new production of THE CUNNING LITTLE VIXEN, ‘Jezibaba’ in RUSALKA as well as CARMEN, returned to Prague for THE CUNNING LITTLE VIXEN and a revival of TAJEMSTVI and performed at the Staatsoper Hamburg with HAENSEL UND GRETEL, RIGOLETTO (Maddalena) and ‘Dorabella’ in COSI FAN TUTTE.
Her wide repertory includes Mozart roles like ‘Dorabella’/COSI FAN TUTTE, ‘Donna Elvira’/DON GIOVANNI, Belcanto roles like ‘Elisabetta’/MARIA STUARDA’, ‘Maffio Orsini’/LUCREZIA BORGIA, Verdi roles like ‘Maddalena’/RIGOLETTO, ‘Preziosilla’/FORZA DEL DESTINO, others like ‘Rosina’ in IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA, ‘Haensel’ in HAENSEL UND GRETEL, ‘The Foreign Princess’ in RUSALKA, ‘Kristina’ in THE MACROPOULOUS CASE, Orlowsky’/DIE FLEDERMAUS, the title role in ‘CARMEN’, Nicklausse and Muse in ‘LES CONTES D’HOFFMANN.
