BIOGRAPHY
Lucie Kaňková, coloratura soprano from Czech Republic, was born into a family of musicians (her father is a wellknown violoncellist) and first studied violin, performing already as a soloist many times before dedicating herself exclusively so singing, studying in Bern, Lucerne and Prague. Currently, she keeps working with Barbara Locher and Gabriela Benackova.
She is the recipient of numerous competition awards, including e.g. 1st prize at the Antonín Dvořák’s International Singing Competition 2016, 3rd prize at the Bologna International Vocal Competition 2019, 2nd prize IFAC HANDA Australian Singing Competition 2021 – Audience Prize and 1st prize at the Nomea Competition, with the mention “The Best Opera Singer”, 2nd Prize at the Neapolitan Masters Competition 2022 and 1st prize in Mimas Music Festival in Italy.
Her actual repertory includes ‚the Queen of the Night‘/DIE ZAUBERFLOETE, a role that in the meantime has become one of her ‚signature roles‘, sung many times in the past seasons in her home town Prague as well as in Budapest, on tour with the Hungarian State Opera in Japan, in Sofia/Bulgaria, at the Royal Opéra Wallonie in Liège, among others.
She furthermore debuted ‚Violetta Valery‘ in LA TRAVIATA, ‚Gilda‘ in RIGOLETTO, LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR, ANNA BOLENA, but also is home in baroque repertoire, so for example she was ‚Poppea‘ in L’INCORONAZIONE DI POPPEA at the Margravial Opera House in Bayreuth, or in the ‚classic operetta‘ repertoire like ‚GIUDITTA‘ or ‚Adele‘ in DIE FLEDERMAUS, and of course roles of the Czech repertory like ‚Terinka‘ in Antonin Dvorak’s THE JACOBIN or ‚The First Nymph’in RUSALKA, ‚Barce‘ in Smetana’s THE KISS, or Martinu‘s ‚ARIADNE‘ (title role) at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein/Duesseldorf.
Among her season 2024/2025 commitments, DIE ZAUBERFLOETE and LA TRAVIATA at the National Theatre in Prague as well as a new production of LA TRAVIATA at the Opera in Freiburg, while during season 2025/2026 she will do an exciting new debut, Zerbinetta‘ in ARIADNE AUF NAXOS in Prague; she furthermore returns to sing DIE ZAUBERFLOETE and LA TRAVIATA in Prague, THE JAKOBIN in Brno, go on tour to Japan again with the Hungarian State Opera with DIE ZAUBERFLOETE before debuting in summer 2026 at the Festival in Sanxay/France with the same title.
