BIOGRAPHY
Venezuelan Baritone Gustavo Castillo was a member of the Accademia del Teatro alla Scala in Milan, where he began his stage career performing Peter in Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel and Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia.
In the 2025/26 season, Gustavo Castillo will sing Scarpia (Tosca) at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, followed by his debut as Silvio (Pagliacci) at Teatro Massimo Palermo. He then embarks on a tour of Japan with Yutaka Sado and the New Japan Philharmonic with concerts in Tokyo, Osaka and Hyogo. Later in the season he makes his debut as Don Carlo di Vargas (La forza del destino) at Theater Bern and concludes the season in concert performances with Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Walt Disney Concert Hall.
In recent seasons, Gustavo Castillo made his role debut as Scarpia (Tosca) at the Hannover State Opera. Further engagements included Giorgio Germont (La traviata) at the New National Theatre Tokyo, Amonasro (Aida) at Teatro Coccia Novara, Jake Wallace (La fanciulla del West) at Teatro Regio Torino, Mercutio (Roméo et Juliette) at Teatro Petruzzelli Bari, Lescaut (Manon Lescaut) and Renato (Un ballo in maschera) at Theater Klagenfurt, as well as Guido di Monforte (I vespri siciliani) at Teatro Comunale Bologna.
He subsequently debuted as Marcello (La bohème) in Japan and as Posa (Don Carlo) at Theater Bern. Other notable appearances include Sharpless (Madama Butterfly) at Teatro Comunale Bologna, Peter (Hänsel und Gretel), Mirko Zeta (Die lustige Witwe) at Teatro Lirico Cagliari and Enrico (Lucia di Lammermoor) at Ópera de Oviedo. He also sang Figaro (Il barbiere di Siviglia) at La Scala and performed Foscari in Mercadante’s Il bravo at Wexford Festival Opera.
Gustavo has appeared in concert with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Gustavo Dudamel, as well as with the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal and the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed in Montreal, San Diego and Los Angeles, and made his debut as the baritone soloist in Estévez’ Cantata Criolla with the MDR Symphony Orchestra under Dennis Russell Davies.
His concert repertoire includes works by A. Faist, M. Duruflé, Mozart (Krönungsmesse), Bach (Magnificat), Beethoven (Symphony No. 9), Orff (Carmina Burana), Fauré’s Requiem and Estévez’ Cantata Criolla, among many others.
