BIOGRAPHY

Born in Milan, Giampaolo Maria Bisanti studied conducting, clarinet, piano and composition at the Conservatory ‘G.Verdi’ in his home town; he has won several awards in international conducting competitions including the ‘Dimitris Mitropolous’ competition in Athens (chairman Sir Neville Marriner).  Between 2017 and 2022 he has been Chief Condcutor of the Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari, Italy, where he also conducted with great success his first Wagner title, ‘THE FLYING DUTCHMAN’. As of 2022/23, he holds the position of Music Director at the Royal Opéra de Wallonie in Liège/Belgium.

Season 2025-2026 will see him busy in Liège with FAUST, LUCREZIA BORGIA and his first Russian title, PIQUE DAME,  at the Staatsoper Vienna with MADAME BUTTERFLY and LA TRAVIATA,  with TOSCA at the Staatsoper Hamburg as well as at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, with IL TROVATORE at the Teatro Carlo Felice Genoa, LUCREZIA BORGIA at the Maggio Musicale in Florence, ROMEO ET JULIETTE at the Semperoper Dresden and with his Opera Australia debut in Melbourne with LA TRAVIATA.

As  of 2015, he has had a number of highly successful and important international debuts such as the new production of ‘La Bohème’ at the Oper Zurich and ‘Macbeth’ at the Teatro Liceo Barcelona, which rapidly launched him into the spot light and gaining high esteem . Since then, he had successful debuted with different new productions and revivals at the Staatsoper Vienna, Semperoper Dresden, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Bayerische Staatsoper Munich,  Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence, Festival in Peralada, Festival Les Chorégies in Orange, Teatro Sao Carlos Lisbon, New National Theatre Tokyo and  Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, among others.  

During the past seasons, other great international debuts have taken place which include the Staatsoper Hamburg with a new production of ‘Lucia di Lammermoor’ followed by many other titles, the Opéra Bastille in Paris,  the Opéra de Montecarlo, the Théatre Capitole in Toulouse, the Scala Milan where he lead ‘Adriana Lecouvreur’ and ‘Un Ballo in maschera’ in 2022, followed by Macbeth in 2023 and ‘Cavalleria Rusticana/Pagliacci’ in 2024, furthermore in the United States in Seattle leading ‘La Traviata’.

Initially primarily requested for Italian titles of the Belcanto, Verdian and Verismo repertory, during the years he has enriched and expanded his horizons conquering successfully titles of the French repertory (FAUST, LA DAMNATION DE FAUST, WERTHER, ROMEO ET JULIETTE), but also did his first Wagner titles, so the above mentioned  THE FLYING DUTCHMAN in Bari  and most recently TRISTAN UND ISOLDE (Liège, 2025), furthermore Dvoraks’ RUSALKA,  Berlioz’ BENVENUTO CELLINI (new production at the Semperoper Dresden in 2024), attending his first Russian title,  PIQUE DAME in Liège in 2026 as said above,  but soon will also take over his first titles of Richard Strauss.
