BIOGRAPHY

Maria Chabounia began playing the piano in her hometown of Minsk at the age of 5. She went on to study piano and singing at the Belarusian State Academy of Music, graduating in 2016.

Maria's projects for 2023/24 include Adele/DIE FLEDERMAUS at the Opera Flanders in Antwerp and Ghent and her house debut at Gärtnerplatztheater Munich with Lisa/LA SONNAMBULA.

She gained her first stage experience as Gilda/RIGOLETTO and Marfa/ZAR SALTAN at the Bolshoi Theater in Belarus. Shortly after, she debuted at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden in the title role of CAT IVANKA by Massimiliano Matesic, directed by Vera Nemirova. This was followed by engagements at the Hamburg State Opera, where she sang Euridyce/ORPHEUS, Clorinda/LA CENERENTOLA as well as Papagena and Barbarina. At Opera Malmö she sang Gilda in a new production of RIGOLETTO directed by Kaspar Holton.

In 2021 Maria made her debut as Musetta/LA BOHEME at the Puccini Opera Festival in Torre del Lago and sang the same role at the Opera Flanders in Antwerp and Ghent. In the 2022/23 season she returned to Malmö Opera to sing Susanna in a new production of LE NOZZE DI FIGARO.

Maria Chabounia has won several competitions such as the DEBUT Competition 2014 (Weikersheim, 2nd prize), the Minsk Opera Competition (1st prize), the Opéra de Marseille Competition 2018 (best interpretation of a French aria & audience prize) and the Marmande Competition 2015 (Special prize of the jury). In 2019 she took part in the Accademia Rossiniana and sang the role of Madama Cortese in IL VIAGGIO A REIMS at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro.
